Where to find a Ladies-only Spa

It can be really hard to find a ladies-only spa! No disrespect to the bros but having a space where women can relax by themselves, especially in our busy modern lives is a luxury we could all do with, from time to time, so why should Muslim women miss out?

Since the original ladies-only spa, The Sanctuary in Covent Garden shut down I’ve never been to a spa in the UK quite simply because I don’t want half-naked men around while I’m chilling in the sauna and jacuzzi. Me and thousands of other women (not just Muslim) would like to have the option of a ladies-only spa but I know that it’s a difficult feat. Most spas are within hotels so how can they exclude their male guests? But we don’t have to go to Turkey or Malaysia for this luxury because I’ve managed to find some ladies only spas right here in Blighty. So here is my list:

Casa Spa — Edgware Road, London

Unsurprisingly the first on my list is in Edgware Rd, a predominantly Arab area so clearly the demand for a ladies-only spa is real. Casa Spa specialises in hammam treatments which involve a beautiful marbled wet room, where you’re soaped up and bathed. Various different treatments within the hammam are offered. Casa Spa boasts a traditional Arabian and Moroccan hammam (please don’t ask me what the difference is), massages and body treatments. They can also accommodate hen dos and group visits if you need to go out of the regular ladies-only time.

Ladies Only

The Beauty Lodge — Wood Green, London

This spa is run by women for women. It offers an infrared sauna, hot tub, massages and hot stone treatments, not forgetting all your usual beauty salon services. As well as this you can also have afternoon tea here and there is a shisha option (whattt!?). Book me a spa package now, please! Prices start as low as £18 for an hour.

Little Jannah Organic Spa — Streatham, London

Another beauty salon and spa, especially for women and they, can do your hair (great for hijab-wearing women). They also have a gym and infrared sauna. Body wraps and hammam treatment as well as facials and regular beauty treatments are all available here too.

Ushvani Spa — Chelsea, London

Described as London’s most luxurious spa this one is for those of you who are willing to splash the cash. The whole spa has a Malaysian theme, beautifully kitted out to make you feel like you’re somewhere exotic like Langkawi. Ushvani specialises in massages and prices start at £160. Although the spa welcomes men too, the lower ground spa facilities are for ladies only.

The London Beach Hotel, County Club & Spa — Kent

It’s not in London and it’s not by the beach but the great thing about this hotel is that there is a section cordoned off for ladies only which I’ve only really seen in resorts in Muslim countries. I’m sure there are more hotels like this in England but I’ve yet to discover them. The main pool is shared but a separate spa, sauna and jacuzzi are dedicated to the ladies. The best thing is, you can book a spa session and have a cream tea after. Perfect!

The Old Hammam & Spa — Edmonton, London

The clue with this spa is in the name. There is a massive traditional-style hammam area where you can have treatments, as well as massages etc. I like this place as they haven’t forgotten the brothers. Females are booked in with female therapists and males with male therapists. That sounds like equality to me! They’re also open until 9.30 too so you could go after work if you’re a North Londoner!

Ladies Only: Mon & Wed 10am – 9.30pm, Sat 10-5pm. Men only and couples sessions operate the rest of the time.

Spa Experience — Bethnal Green & Old Street, London

Spa Experience is a chain of spas run by Better gyms across the country, but only Bethnal Green and Old Street branches have ladies only days. The three-hour ‘Thermal Spa session’ includes Turkish Bath, hammam, plunge pool, hydrotherapy pool and ice fountain and is a total steal at £26. Ok so it’s in a leisure centre but it’s a great way to get together with some friends without breaking the bank!

Ladies Only: Bethnal Green – Tues, Fri, Sat ladies only Mon – men only

Old St – Mon 11-6pm, Friday 10-9pm. Mixed at all other times.

Lorrens Ladies Spa — Torquay, Devon

Lorrens Ladies Spa is ideal for a ladies-only spa weekend. Why not check out the English Riveria and then have a spa day (not a whole day, can have an hour here too). Sounds a bit like my ideal weekend actually! You can also book lunch here after using all the usual spa facilities including an outdoor, heated swimming pool too. Lovely.

The Moroccan Spa — Harrods, Knightsbridge

The Moroccan Spa is located on the 5th floor of Harrods and offers variations on the Moroccan hammam ritual, the Signature Hammam ritual looking particularly appealing. Mud wraps various anti-ageing wraps are available as well as a beautiful relaxation area with nibbles. Prices start at £60. The downside is getting on the tube after spending an afternoon here.

Ladies only: Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat 10.30am-8.30pm, Tues 10-4, Thurs 10-1. Mixed at all other times.
